A Percy Jackson TV show is officially coming to Disney+ and, yep, that means it's time to get excited.

The series, titled Percy Jackson and the Olympians, will be based on the best-selling book pentalogy by author Rick Riordan, telling the story of 12-year-old demigod, Percy Jackson, a descendant of the Greek God Poseidon.

Disney has said that the adventure series will be "closely aligned" with the books, with Riordan himself writing the pilot alongside a wider team - and he also serves as an executive producer.

Author Riordan has previously expressed his disapproval in the two existing Percy Jackson films (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters), reportedly writing in a now-deleted tweet, "I still have not seen the movies, and don't plan on ever doing so. I judge them from having read the scripts, because I care most about the story. I certainly have nothing against the very talented actors. Not their fault. I'm just sorry they got dragged into that mess," according to PEOPLE.

So, with Riordan on board, the new TV show has got PJ fans very excited indeed. Here's everything we know so far...

When was the Percy Jackson and the Olympians announced?

Disney+ announced news of the series via a video shared on Twitter and Instagram. In the clip, author Riordan tells viewers, "The wait is over, demigods. I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens. The smart folks at Disney+ have given us the green light."

Speaking about director James Bobin's involvement, he went on to assure fans, "James knows the Percy Jackson books well - his kids are fans - so we're in great hands." He went on, "Thanks to all of you for your excitement about the series. It's gonna be great."

What will Percy Jackson and the Olympians be about?

The series will be based on the books of the same name. According to Disney+'s description:

"The live action series tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who's just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus."

Who will star in Percy Jackson and the Olympians?

Disney+ has announced that "Casting is underway" for the series, so unfortunately there aren't any confirmed cast members as of yet.

However, fans on Twitter have already begun quite the campaign, encouraging Disney to cast Logan Lerman (who played Percy Jackson in the existing film series) as Percy's Greek God father, Poseidon.

When will Percy Jackson and the Olympians be released?

Sadly, there's no confirmed release date yet. The series has only just been announced as of January 2022, with casting currently underway, so it's likely to be a while before production begins - and even longer before the show airs.

Still, in the meantime, if you do want to watch the two existing Percy Jackson films (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters), they're both available to watch now on Disney+.
