Education and law enforcement officials in the Southern Tier say a Snapchat post threatening violence at Southern Tier schools was not credible.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder released a statement on Tuesday morning about the purported online threat.

Harder said a screenshot of a message that had been posted on Snapchat had passed along in "several local school districts."

In his message, the sheriff said the identical threat about "shooting up" schools due to bullying has been circulating on social media across the United States.

Harder said the Broome sheriff's office "has found no link to local schools and no evidence the threat is credible."

Maine-Endwell, Chenango Forks and Whitney Point school district officials were among those in Broome County who released similar statements to assure students, parents and residents that there was no real threat.
