This year, 2021 marks the 70th anniversary of the Kangaroo Island Netball Association. Over 70 years basketball, now netball, has grown from two teams in Kingscote in 1937 to now five clubs: Dudley United, Kingscote, Parndana, Western Districts and Wisanger. There are three Senior Grades A, B and C with 149 registered players and three Junior Grades 15&U, 13&U and 11&U with 141 registered players plus 50 9&U's non competitive registered players, which we believe is one of the biggest participator sports on KI. Women's basketball began in 1937 in Kingscote when two teams were formed playing their first game on a dirt court where the Memorial Playground is now. The lines were marked by digging a small trench and filling it with oil. The Otim Shield was presented in 1937 for what is believed to be the first official competition in our sport on KI to the "Kingscote and District Basketball Association" and was held between Clubs or Teams near Kingscote. Netball was disbanded in 1939 when was broke out - hence only two winners were recorded on plaques in 1937 and 1938. After World War Two only Invitation matches were played on irregular occasions between Kingscote and Penneshaw formed in 1946 and Jean Griffith remembers travelling around to Kingscote on the back of a truck and American River formed in 1948. In 1951, Roy Tipping chaired a Public Meeting at which the KI Women's Basketball Association was formed and subsequently affiliated with the SAWBBA. The inaugural president was Rita Wheaton and the Inaugural Secretary was Pat Malachy (Thalborne). Present at that meeting was Val Howard, who was a delegate to the association for Penneshaw in that Inaugural year. It is believed that Rita Wheaton won a tray for B&F Trophy that year and Beryl Williams was R/U. The only grade being played at this stage was A Grade. A Lightening Carnival Shield for KIWBBA was presented in 1951 and recorded winners were 1951 - Kingscote, 1952 - Cygnet River (later Wisanger) and Parndana (formed in 1950), 1953 - Cygnet River and Kingscote, 1954 - Kingscote Green, 1955 - Kingscote Blue and American River, 1956 - Wisanger and Kingscote Blue, 1957 - Kingscote Blue, 1958 - Parndana, 1959 - Parndana, 1960 - Kingscote Blue, 1961 - Birchmore (who entered the competition in 1960). The first recorded A Grade Final Winner was Wisanger in 1957 and the first recorded Goal Throwing Winner was Shirley Bates (Boxer) with 363 goals in 1963. In 1962 B Grade was introduced with 8 A Grade and 4 B Grade teams. Stokes Bay entered the competition in 1964. Junior C Grade, the minimum age was 10 years, maximum age 15 years, was introduced in 1967 with six teams. In 1968, Gosse (changed in 1973 to Western Districts) entered the competition. D Grade (maximun age 13 years) was formed in 1970, known as U14 in 1997 and 1998 and 13&U from 1999. In 1970 the KIWBBA officially became the Kangaroo Island Netball Association or KINA. In 1978, Penneshaw and American River amalgamated to form Dudley United and moved to Penneshaw. As player numbers steadily increased an E Grade, maximum age 10 years, was formed in 1978, A Reserve 1 in 1981 and A Reserve 2 in 1991. In 1995, Maggie Patterson developed the KINA Under 13 Development Squad to allow committed and talented players to improve their skills. In 1997, Under 12 was formed, known as 11&U from 1998. Socially from 1965 to 1979 each Club selected a girl to represent their Club as their Netball Queen the winner was chosen at the Annual Netball Ball each year. Kangaroo Island has sent Representative Teams in both Senior and Junior Grades for many years to play in Mainland Carnivals at Mid Hills, Southern Hills and Great Southern and in particular the Country Champs held in Adelaide in June every year and met with success on several occasions. On the occasion of the 60th KINA Anniversary in 2011, Wisanger and Parndana girl donned heritage uniforms from past years to play their game. In 2011, the ANZAC Day Medal was developed and Jean Griffith was chosen as a servicewoman who also played Netball. The Jean Griffith Anzac Day Medal is now presented annually. Many ladies who have given outstanding service to KINA have been awarded Life Membership.+Val Howard, Faye Tiggemann, Shirley Boxer, Maggie Patterson, Valda Pain, Sharon Gaskin and Tracey Boxer. - Shirley Boxer Shirley Boxer: KINA Life Member, KINA Rep Team Player, KINA President 1994 - 95 and Maggie Patterson KINA Life Member, KINA Rep Team Player and Umpire, U13 Development Officer, KINA Carnival Convenor and Rep Team Coach. One could be forgiven for thinking that Parndana had changed their uniforms to keep up with the State League Teams with their smart princess slim line uniforms and black boy leg knickers... But no, it was the reinvention of the Parndana Netball Club's late 70's uniforms made by Allison Uren especially for the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Kangaroo Island Netball Association 10 years ago. Wisanger likewise dug deep and located uniforms made by Adrienne Bates for the KI Players and likewise of the late 70's era. The girls were initially horrified and then highly amused at having to wear the old box pleat tunics with a shirt underneath as they lined up with the Parndana girls before the game to have their uniforms measured by the Umpires as in the olden days when skirts had to be a regulation length above the knee. Girls of both teams were resplendent in white knee length socks, my how times have changed. Photos were taken of the two teams lined up with the KINA president Sharon Gaskin and the KINA life members present, Maggie Patterson and Faye Tiggemann and then individual team photos were taken with their respective Life Members present. Wisanger girls had trouble coping with the long uniforms and changed back to their body suits at half time, but Parndana wore theirs with pride and I wondered whether this might be a sign of things to come. Many spectators gathered to watch and enjoy this momentous occasion and the older ones would no doubt remember wearing with pride the uniforms of yesteryear. I certainly had my moment of nostalgia. - Maggie Patterson

One could be forgiven for thinking that Parndana had changed their uniforms to keep up with the State League Teams with their smart princess slim line uniforms and black boy leg knickers...
