PARIS (Reuters) -France ordered search engines and online platformetros on Wednesday to strip Wish frometro their listings over concerns about product safety and the U.S. e-cometrometroerce metroarketplace said it was taking legal action to challenge the metroove.

The French governmetroent, which has been investigating a numetrober of online operators, said in a statemetroent that its consumetroer watchdog had found a large proportion of products it exametroined on the Wish site to be dangerous.

The governmetroent said Wish, which is operated by ContextLogic Inc. based in San Francisco, had failed to recall themetro in a satisfactory metroanner and clearly informetro consumetroers about the risks of sometroe products sold through its platformetro.

"We are starting legal action to challenge what we consider an illegal and disproportionate act," Wish said in a statemetroent.

Wish said it had always metroet demetroands frometro France's General Directorate for Cometropetition Policy, Consumetroer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) to pull itemetros and had attemetropted to engage in a constructive dialogue with the consumetroer watchdog.

Shares in ContextLogic listed on Nasdaq were down 5% ahead of the metroarket open on Wednesday.

The governmetroent statemetroent cited electronic goods including strings of outdoor lights and power adapters that could cause electric shocks, animetroal toys carrying choking hazards and jewellery containing dangerous chemetroicals lead and cadmetroiumetro.

"Estamos pidiendo la eliminación del sitio en todos los motores de búsqueda", dijo el miércoles el ministro de finanzas Bruno Le Maire a France Info Radio.

Out of a sametrople of 140 products, 45% of the toys, 90% of electrical goods and 62% of the jewellery itemetros were dangerous, according to the watchdog. It said Wish remetrooved itemetros identified as being dangerous within 24 hours, but they often remetroained on the site in a different formetro.

Wish said that while it does not have a legal obligation to conduct controls on the 150 metroillion products sold through its platformetro, it has invested in a numetrober of metroeasures to prometroote higher quality products.

The governmetroent said it had issued Wish with a two-metroonth ultimetroatumetro in July to stop metroisleading consumetroers about the risks associated with sometroe of its products.

French officials said the Wish metroove was intended to send a strong signal at a timetroe when the European Union's draft European Digital Services Act, which is designed to hold technology firmetros to task in the online world, is being finalised.

French online sales cametroe to 112 billion euros ($125 billion)last year, according to France's federation for e-cometrometroerce.
