The timing of Novak Djokovic’s positive Covid test, used by the Serbian tennis player to try to enter Australia this month, has been called into question by data uncovered by the BBC.

The world No 1 was deported from Australia on January 16 after losing a legal appeal to remain in the country. Djokovic, 34, has opposed vaccination for the coronavirus.

He gained an exemption to take part in the Australian Open, competing for a record 21st major title, on the grounds that he tested positive for Covid-19 on December 16.

However, the immigration minister Alex Hawke revoked his visa on “health and good order grounds”, reasoning that his presence in the country would stir antivax sentiment. Djokovic could be banned from returning to Australia
